Southwire successful with ADVARIS

Reliable and punctual delivery, consistent quality – even for customer requests on short notice or modifications – minimization of stock and improved transparency as the basis for process optimization: the ambitious company objectives of Southwire, North America’s largest wire and cable manufacturer, called for a well-designed Manufacturing Execution System (MES) specifically tailored to this industrial sector. The wire and cable giant found what it was looking for at ADVARIS. The software specialist from Bruchsal, Germany scored with expertise acquired over many years and standard solutions that are precisely tailored to the wire and cable sector—thus contributing to the realization of Southwire’s business objectives. Guy Brassard, Chief Information Officer at Southwire Carollton, commented on the long-term project, “In future, we want to have greater transparency in production processes across our locations and to be able to trace back every product through the entire production process.” Besides precise information at the factories, the company was particularly interested in options for quality surveillance and control.

ADVARIS MES is one of the functional elements in Southwire’s Industry 4.0/Smart Factory strategy

“In ADVARIS we have found a reliable partner that presents approaches with a high level of competence specific to our industry and that can reliably implement these for us within an agreed time-line”, the IT chief added. He continued, “ADVARIS MES is the control center of the factory. It enables us to identify deviations, shortages, and disruptions in the production process at an early stage. The intelligent system support enables our employees to react promptly and to make the correct decision. In conjunction with the company-wide SAP system, ADVARIS MES is one of the functional elements in Southwire’s Industry 4.0/Smart Factory strategy. More than half of our factories have already been equipped with the system—by 2018 we will have connected the remaining production locations.”

Brassard regards the high level of flexibility as a further major advantage of the MES from ADVARIS: “The system could be adapted to the existing structures at Southwire—on this basis, we were able to make positive changes to our business Processes.” This includes detailed production scheduling with the aim of adherence to due dates and the minimization of machine set-up times. The continuing optimization of the sequence of production orders is shown at the touchscreen terminals in the production hall. The recorded production data include barcode scanning of every individual drum with the exact length, machine run-time, material usage and quality test values. Process data, such as production speed and the lengths produced are acquired directly from the machine controls (SPS) via interfaces.
